Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) is one of the UK's top modern universities, situated in Glasgow, Scotland. The INTO Centre at the heart of campus provides unique academic pathway programmes that are designed for international students, enabling you to progress to one of GCU's many specialist degrees.

History

Glasgow Caledonian University was formed in 1993 when two well-established colleges merged together – The Queen's College, Glasgow and Glasgow Polytechnic. In 2008, GCU partnered with INTO to help international students study at the campus. Together, they created unique courses that help international students get accustomed to life in the UK and improve their English language and academic skills.

Education

If you have a dream job in mind, the University’s career-focused programmes are designed to prepare you for your future. Start with an English language course or an International Foundation, International Diploma or International Graduate Diploma in Built Environment, Business, Computing, Engineering or Science at INTO GCU, then progress to the University to study anything from Electrical Power Engineering, International Operations and Supply Chain Management and Big Data Technologies, to International Fashion Marketing, Computer Games Design and International Human Resource Management.

Research

Research is a huge part of GCU’s ethos. In 2017, they realigned their strategy around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, meaning that their research now focuses on Sustainable Environments, Inclusive Societies and Health Lives. Thanks to research conducted at GCU, the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup will see solar powered floor tiles installed in pedestrian walkways to create renewable energy from daylight.

Career

With a focus on enhancing your employability, many of GCU’s degree programmes grant the opportunity for you to take a work placement with top global companies. One international student who recently progressed from INTO GCU to study engineering at GCU got to go to Germany for a work placement with Aeronautics company, Airbus. Other fields of study outside of engineering also have the opportunity to work with global companies, including computing, health and social care, and fashion business.

Student services

The Student Services team in the INTO Centre will support you in every way during your studies, from the moment you arrive to the moment you graduate. They will be there for any issues ranging from renewing your visa and opening a bank account, to making new friends and settling into the local area. When you progress to the University, the Student Support Services will be there for you to help you with IT, financial advice, career planning and any other issues that may arise.

Housing services

Whatever accommodation you choose, you're assured a fantastic student experience. Most INTO students stay at Liberty Park – modern flats just a five-minute walk away from campus. You'll have a private bedroom with an en suite bathroom and have access to a communal kitchen and living area for the flat. There's a shared games room/social area for all residents of Liberty Park and a laundrette for you to wash and dry your clothes.

Campus life

GCU has a city campus in Glasgow, UK – so you are fully integrated into the community. A few minutes’ walk will lead you to high street stores, the train and bus stations, cinemas and restaurants. On campus, all of the buildings are only a short walk from one another – the Students’ Association building (where societies meet and you can find the on-campus bar and restaurant) is close to the INTO Centre, which is close to the Saltire Centre (where you can find the library) and the teaching blocks.

Sports facilities

Opposite the INTO Centre, you’ll find the Arc Health and Fitness Centre. Here, you’ll find three gym areas with specialist fitness machines, weights, squat racks and much more equipment. There is a variety of fitness classes you can attend – from spin and Zumba to circuit training and body pump – and you can also hire a hall or the outdoor activity area to play tennis or football. You can join a wide range of sports clubs at GCU, ranging from badminton, athletics and boxing, to basketball, swimming and martial arts.

Accreditation

Many of the University’s programmes are accredited by professional bodies, meaning that you’ll have the chance to register as a member and potentially take certification exams to enhance your employability prospects. Professional bodies and accreditations include:

  • Institute of Mechanical Engineers
  • Institution of Engineering and Technology
  • EPAS by the European Foundation for Management Development
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing
