History
Founded in 1882, it has the status of a public administrative establishment under the Ministry of Culture.
A long time part of the Direction des musées de France, in 1981 the Ecole du Louvre joined the Réunion des musées nationaux. In 1998, it became a fully-fledged public administrative establishment, as are many other higher education establishments.
Education
The Ecole du Louvre teaches courses in the history of art, archaeology, epigraphy, anthropology and museology. It offers students a cursus comprisingthree cycles with the award of a diploma, and a preparatory class for the competitive entry procedure for heritage curators.
It offers 3 cycles of studies (3 years of undergraduate studies, 2 years of graduate studies and 3 years of post-graduate studies) and a preparatory class for the conservateur du patrimoine competitive exam.
Research
As a higher education establishment, the Ecole du Louvre participates in scientific research in the domain of the history of art through its third cycle courses.It also brings together every year, in the context of international conventions, of the Ecole du Louvre, professors and students from other French and foreign universities, to discuss multidisciplinary research topics in the history of art.

The preventive medicine and health education service works toward avoiding health problems that might interfere with schooling. Students must undergo at least one preventive examination during the first three years of university study.
