History
WelTec was first born as Petone Technical School in 1904, Whitireia was launched in 1985, and the two joined in 2012 to become known as Whitireia and WelTec. Then in September 2022, we became Whitireia and WelTec business division of Te Pūkenga - New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (Te Pūkenga).
Education
International students studying in Wellington can choose from a wide range of study programmes, from Business & IT, to Creative and Engineering.
Research
Our faculty and kaimahi do research in a wide range of areas. All of their work helps develop our communities and holds us accountable for teaching that is modern, relevant, and unique. We take part in the government's Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) evaluation, which allocates funding to tertiary institutions based on research quality.

Whitireia and WelTec | Te Pūkenga encourages our students to succeed and capture career opportunities. Our on campus careers advisor is able to help with that. These services are available to potential students, current students and graduates.

Student services
We have dedicated teams to support international students. Our expert staff can help
you choose the right programme, and provide information and advice to prepare you to live and study in New Zealand.
If you have a concern about your learning environment, about a staff member or another student, we encourage you to discuss it directly with a staff member or that person where possible. Alternatively, you could seek advice from your Programme Manager or other support staff including Māori, Pasifika, International support staff, or the student advocacy service. Helpdesks can be located in the library or learning commons.
Housing services
Homestay accommodation gives students a caring, supportive, and secure environment to live and study in. It is also a great way to practice your English and experience life in Wellington and New Zealand.
You will need to book a homestay at least 2 weeks before arriving in New Zealand.
Students also have the option to go flatting – renting a house or an apartment with friends. Your room is private and the lounge, kitchen and bathroom are shared.
Room options include self-catered and fully furnished two or three-bedroom apartments. All apartments include a comfortable living area, bathroom, and fully equipped kitchen for residents to share. Wi-Fi, electricity, gas and water is all included in the weekly rate.
Library services
Print resources can be borrowed from our libraries with a current student identification card. Library e-resources are automatically accessible when you are logged onto a computer at one of our campuses, however if you are off campus, you can still access our e-resources by using your institutional email address and password.
ICT services
ICT Services provides you with computers, printers/photocopiers, and access to software on our campuses to support your study. You can even bring in your own device and connect to our wireless network on most campuses.
Medical services
Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment.
The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for temporary visitors to New Zealand but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs.
Campus life
Petone Campus is located in the vibrant suburb of Petone which is only a 15-minute drive from Wellington city. The area is full of cafes, bars and restaurants as well as being home to the Light House Cinema, Remutaka Cycle Trail and Petone Settlers Museum
Porirua Campus is where Whitireia began and continues to offer a number of community-driven courses. Located just 20 minutes from Wellington City, the Porirua Campus is one of New Zealand's most beautiful sites
Te Kāhui Auaha is our creative campus that opened in 2018. Located right in the heart of Wellington City, situated on the corner of Cuba Street and Dixon Street, it’s just around the corner from Wellington's best loved bars, venues, restaurants and shops
Student clubs
Student Connection is an established student representative body which ensures that important student matters are voiced and considered. Run by students for students, Student Connection facilitates opportunities which champion the student's voice and enhance student life and learning. Members are elected annually by their peers, with the aim of representing student interests across a wide range of student demographics.
Student Voice Representatives are important contact points for both students and staff. All students at Whitireia and WelTec | Te Pūkenga can be a Student Voice Representative, you need to be elected by your peers.
