Ara was created in 2016 when CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic merged, bringing together two well-established organisations, each with around 100 years of experience and success.
Ara Institute of Canterbury is a vibrant, progressive, government-funded institute providing world-class, tertiary-level education.
Ara's leading-edge projects contribute to developments and new ways of thinking in a variety of industries, both locally and internationally. Many projects involve international collaborations, while others seek to further knowledge in areas closer to home by directly working with local industries and communities.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2021. Universities with a score above 4.0 (out of 5) in any of the 8 award categories, receive Badges of Excellence. Congratulations!
When moving to a new city to study, one of the most important decisions you need to make is where to live.
Ara has campuses in Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru and each of these regions offers a range of accommodation options. You may decide to go flatting or opt for private board, or you might choose to live in a homestay.
In Christchurch, Ara’s Ōtautahi House (right across the road from the City campus) offers apartment-style accommodation with other students in a flat share. Preference will be given to students enrolling in full-time study, and those relocating to Christchurch for study from other regions.
Providing professional, confidential services for the health and wellbeing of Ara students.
Ara’s Health Centre offers a range of discounted health services for students.
These include consultations with nurses, a doctor, a social worker and counsellors. Students can access free counselling sessions. We take Community Service cards** and offer ACC appointments.
Student life at Ara is so much more than just study!
Making friends is easy and there's always an opportunity to catch up at a café - either on campus or close by - or to have an impromptu game of soccer or basketball during a study break.Special events are staged throughout the year and they're always a good chance to have fun, meet other students and experience something new. These can range from the orientation experience to student exhibitions and lunch-time cultural performances.Wishlist
