History
Matej Bel University was established on the 1st of July 1992 by merging the College of Economics of Services and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Pedagogical Faculty in Banská Bystrica.
The School of Economics of Services and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Faculty of Education in Banská Bystrica form the basis of the new university – Matej Bel University, which currently has six faculties.

Research
Research priorities at the UMB have been defined on the basis of the UMB Action Plan 2015-2020 as well as on national research priorities and Horizon 2020. The university has six faculties, five of them focus on SSH (socio-economic sciences, humanities, educational sciences, political sciences and law); one faculty is natural science oriented. In recent years a multidisciplinary approach and interfaculty collaboration have been strenghtened. Internationalisation of research is an essential element of most research projects. The UMB has been successful in FP7 and H2020 particularly in SSH fields and has an ambition to be the best Slovak university in the SSH international research collaboration.

Housing services
University dormitories at MBU provide accommodation to their full-time students for the duration of the academic year and to students studying in external form of studies for the short-term period. Each year about 500 to 700 students find themselves some secondary school accommodation facilities and corporate dormitories in Banská Bystrica and the surrounding area with wider capacities.In case you were not provided accommodation in the dormitories, you also have the option of external accommodation at family pensions.
Library services
The University Library holds over 278 000 documents of domestic and foreign provenance from humanities, social, and natural sciences.

The field of studies system in higher education of the Slovak Republic issued by the Ministry of Education no. 2090/2002 entered into force on 16th December 2002. The field of studies system is administered by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic. The system includes the courses in which universities in the Slovak Republic are authorised to provide higher education.
The university is granted the right to confer an academic degree by the Minister of education.The university can admit only candidates for the study of accredited study programs included in the list of study programmes.
