History
The so-called »Stuttgart Model« was a joint initiative of the Stuttgart firms of Daimler-Benz, Bosch and Standard Elektrik Lorenz (SEL) which, in 1972, established the combination of theoretical education at the Academy and on-the-job training in a company or institution which forms the basis of today's Cooperative State University.
Education
The mission of the DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen encompasses significant features and principles which define living, learning and working together. It serves to orientate and guide us in our plans and actions, focusing on academic and, simultaneously, career-oriented study programmes of excellent quality to promote outstanding and committed up-and-coming talent among our corporate partners.
Research
Cooperative research is conducted in an application and transfer-oriented fashion, particularly in cooperation with corporate partners. In particular, it develops innovative concepts, strategies and technologies and reflects the professional and technical conditions encountered in business, engineering and social work.

Library services
The university library houses over 50,000 textbooks relating to business and social work, numerous loose-leaf collections which are continually updated, over 150 specialist magazines and the most important daily and weekly newspapers. In addition to print media, it also offers extensive and varied databases. 20.000 specialised journals and 50,000 eBooks can be accessed as electronic data.
ICT services
The IT Department is a modern service provider for the university. It provides workstations for students in 10 rooms on all the campuses of the DHBW in Villingen-Schwenningen. The IT Department maintains the central network infrastructure, so the local network and, additionally, WLAN (wireless local area network) is available 24/7 for both students and lecturers.
Campus life

Students at the Cooperative State University can enjoy a pleasant studying environment on the campus and at two further locations in Schwenningen. The attractive countryside in the surroundings give the dual city of Villingen-Schwenningen its very special flair.
Sports facilities
The StuV offers sporting activities for students at the DHBW VS. The university is a member of the German University Sports Federation.
In addition to this, Villingen-Schwenningen offers numerous other options to become involved in sport. These include activities such as ice skating in the Eisstadion and swimming in "Solemar" in Bad Dürrheim, the indoor pools in Villingen or Schwenningen or "Aquasol" in Rottweil (see below for addresses). Or you can simply cycle or skate on a well-developed network of cycle lanes.Student clubs
The Studierendenwerk Freiburg student union can provide you with support during your studies in cooperation with the Cooperative State University. Information can be obtained directly here on accommodation, tuition fees, insurance or the menu in the refectory (Mensa) and cafeteria. Please go to the Studierendenwerk Freiburg website for other services and detailed information. Moreover, in addition to free events at the DHBW VS, you can also avail of services offered by the Studentenwerk Freiburg. The Studentenwerk holds a few seminars in Villingen-Schwenningen in cooperation with the DHBW VS so that you need not travel to Freiburg for this purpose.
