The Institute for Tropical Medicine (ITM) was established over a century ago. We began by training doctors and nurses to work in the Congo and are now internationally recognised in the fields of education, medicine, science and world health.
The ITM is an inter-university but autonomous post-graduate institute for specialised training, research and services provision. It is supervised by a Board of Governors on which all concerned universities and authorities are represented. The ITM draws its academic recognition and core funding from the Ministry of Education of the Flemish Community in Belgium
Students and staff can benefit from ITM’s strong international ties and membership in many EU and international/global partnerships and networks. European and international cooperation projects in education englobe strategic partnerships, knowledge alliances as well as capacity building projects. These are coordinated by the Education Office and the Education Units in the three scientific departments of ITM. Significant examples are tropEd and 'The Alliance'.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2021. Universities with a score above 4.0 (out of 5) in any of the 8 award categories, receive Badges of Excellence. Congratulations!

WikitropicaThis is the online version of the course notes on clinical tropical medicine written by ITM experts. Wikitropica is an evidence-based and very elaborate online encyclopedia but is not intended as a clinical reference.
Our Hospitalization Department is located inside the Antwerp University Hospital (UZA). This provides immediate access to other university hospital medical services, if necessary. It also gives UZA physicians the possibility of consulting our tropical medicine specialists, since the Tropical Medicine Hospitalization Department is under the supervision of ITM physicians.
