The history of Shantou University Medical College dates back to 1924. In that year our direct predecessor, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School, was founded. In 1959, the Chaozhou Obstetrics Training School obtained approval from the Chinese State Council to expand into a generic medical college offering 3-year training programs in clinical medicine. 

Providing medical education is our primary responsibility. We are committed to offering comprehensive medical programs of the highest quality to our students.Several of our programs are listed as key national or key provincial disciplines, and each year our College is granted major educational awards and prizes. Our programs are consistently among the first choices for top students in Guangdong and many other provinces in China.

SUMC is a major medical research base in southern China with several important research centers, research units and key laboratories. With state-of-the-art facilities and equipment at our disposal, our international teams of first-rate scientists have been able to make significant scientific contributions and breakthroughs.

The past few years have shown a dramatic growth in our research activity at SUMC, both in terms of range of research areas, quality of work and outcome. New research centers and international collaborative programs have been set up or are in the process of being set up, attracting domestic and foreign faculty.
