About

History

  • The roots of higher education in Eger can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Legal instruction started in 1740, while teaching of philosophy was launched in 1756 along with the establishment of the College of Theology in 1700.
  • On 1st of December 2015 the new institution continues its dedicated work under the name of Eszterházy Károly University from 1st of July 2016.

Education

  • The implementation of theological, legal, philosophical, and medical training was followed by the construction of an educational building capable of hosting a four-faculty university meeting all contemporary demands.
  • Following the requirements of the Bologna Process and the attendant integration into the European Higher Education Area derived from Hungary's membership in the European Union, the College's goal was issuing domestically and internationally acclaimed valuable degrees and diplomas via the continuous improvement of its educational services and the elaboration of transparent, flexible academic programs providing a freedom of choice and meeting student demands.

Research

The Knowledge Transfer Office of Eszterházy Károly University has been operating as a service unit of the University's Research and Development Centre. The main purpose of the centre is to strengthen the relations between the industrial sector and higher education, and to enhance the efficiency of the knowledge transfer activity of the university.The mission of the unit is to focus on developments concerning real problems and to stimulate innovative activities of the university's researchers and students.

Student services

The Student Service Centre offers counselling, peer support, manages the alumni system, and has advisors specialised in various areas of student life including education, admission and mental health. In order to promote students' chances at the labour market, the Student Centre places a significant emphasis on employment information exchange via the organisation of continuous job search trainings, communicational and learning efficiency promoting programmes. The Student Service Centre successfully cooperates with other organisational and functional units including the Student Body Association and the Centre for International Relations.

The University maintains state-of-the-art and affordable student hotels in all the four cities of Eger, Gyöngyös, Sárospatak and Jászberény, providing comfortable housing and social life for the students.

Library services

The Central Library has sub units including social science, literary science, foreign language and natural science components in which the necessary professional texts are available. The periodicals room houses several domestic and foreign publications and the media collection also offers access to a wide range of documents. The Archdiocesan Library of the Lyceum houses almost half a million volumes.

Sports facilities

Student athletic activity takes place at the University Sports Club providing practice and competition opportunities in several sports such as track and field, fitness, swimming, basketball, volley ball, tennis, and soccer. The fitness centre is equipped with work-out rooms, squash courts, an indoor tennis court, and a sauna. The university's athletic teams of water polo, handball, and basketball compete in the first division of the Hungarian National League.

Student clubs

The Student Scholar Groups (TDK) complement the scholarly research efforts conducted at the institution. The continuous success rate of our students at National Student Scholar Conferences is an important indicator of the level of the institutional research efforts.
