The Academy was established at the suggestion of the Minister of National Education Stoyan Omarchevski under the name of State Academy of Music. Legitimised by virtue of Royal Decree No. 145 dated 21st July 1921 of His Majesty Tsar Boris III, it took over took over the provision of higher education to students who were being taught at the already operating Music School.
The faculty is the main unit of the higher education institute which brings together departments to ensure the education of students and post-graduates in one or several professional fields in science, in which the high school is accredited to conduct training which unites different departments

The library of the “Prof. Pantcho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music has existed since the founding of the Academy in 1921 It is a unique, specialized scientific and methodological center for printed music and music-theoretical publications in Bulgaria. Its history is connected with the name of Prof. Stoyan Brashovanov, PhD, who headed it from 1925 to 1941.
