History
On March 3, 1891, Hugh Cale, an African-American representative in the N.C. General Assembly from Pasquotank County, sponsored House Bill 383, which established a normal (teaching) school for “teaching and training teachers of the colored race to teach in the common schools of North Carolina.” The institution's first name was Elizabeth City State Colored Normal School (1891-1939).

Housing services
Residence halls are more than just a place to sleep. Personal development during the undergraduate years occurs as a result of students engaging activities inside and outside the classroom. Our Residence Life staff strives to provide students with support and resources, as well as engaging residence hall activities that will develop a sense of community and Viking Pride.
Library services
The G. R. Little Library has a 30 day trial access to the resources below. The library invites all students, faculty, and staff to examine these resources and provide your input.
Medical services
Students and parents alike appreciate the peace of mind the 24-Hour Student Emergency Care Hotline provides, in both emergency and non-emergent medical situations. This toll-free service provides callers with quick, confidential health care advice and information, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It’s hassle-free and it’s easy!
Campus life
Elizabeth City State University has slightly over 830 acres. More than 100 of them represent the campus proper. About 68 acres comprise the former Farm on Weeksville Road (NC 34); a 639-acre tract is reserved for educational research in Currituck County; and some 37 acres comprise other land holdings designed for residential or expansion purposes.
Sports facilities
Sports represented include baseball, men's and women's basketball, football, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. There is a much greater amount of material relating to men's basketball and football than to any of the other sports.
Student clubs
There are many opportunities at Elizabeth City State University for student involvement. The college experience is more gratifying when a student is able to pursue their talents and skills. Combining academics and other interests will allow you to become more discipline in managing your time, and also help to develop cultivate lifelong skills and friendships. Open to all ECSU students.
