Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University) is the leading institution in the system of higher oil and gas education in Russia.



The history of Gubkin University is traced back to 1918, when Moscow Mining Academy was established in Moscow. At that moment, Russian universities did not train petroleum engineers. The issues related to oil were addressed by mining engineers, chemists, mechanics, technologists, physicists, mathematicians and others.


One of the most important achievements of the research and academic activity of Gubkin University scientists is the establishment of research and academic schools that have made a huge impact on scientific and technological development in Russian oil and gas industry, training of scientific and engineering personnel of high qualification. Currently, 27 research and academic schools, led by famous scientists, successfully work at the University.


Annually more than 1,400 full-time students complete their studies at Gubkin University. To provide comprehensive support to students and graduates on employment issues, the Office for Student Employment Assistance was established in the University. The main goal of the Office is to assist the University students and graduates and support them in their professional development.

Housing services

Gubkin University is distinguished by a very vibrant and diverse social life. In addition to academic activities, students are involved in sports and creative work, join student organizations and prepare international events, protect the rights of other students, participate in intellectual competitions and research conferences, become volunteers of various events and engage in charity.

Library services

The main principle of the Library implies that all readers should desire to spend as much time in the Library as possible – to study and communicate. The Library team creates comfortable conditions for users to get full access to information resources as well as the possibility to work with books and periodicals on conventional carriers and with electronic documents.

Student Life

Campus life

  • Gubkin University campus is located in the south-west of Moscow not far from Kaluzhskaya metro station. Campus housing includes 5 multi-storey buildings for 4,176 accommodation places.
  • The University campus is a conveniently located complex with well-developed infrastructure, equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable students’ stay and rest – shared rooms, sports halls, a gym, a computer center, a movie hall, rooms for out-of-class activities such as music, drama etc. Dormitories are located 30-40 minutes by public transport from the main University academic buildings.

Sports facilities

Gubkin University provides students with everything needed for sports activities and preparation for competitions. There are 5 gyms in the University buildings, including a fitness center equipped with stationary bicycles, running tracks, exercise machines and other equipment. On campus there is a sports hall for volleyball, basketball and ping pong; a stadium for practicing track and field athletics and football; and sports rooms in the dormitories.

Student clubs

  • Gubkin University students have the opportunity not only to advance their professional skills, but also to participate in the active life of the University, find reliable friends and wise mentors, develop their interests and hobbies, be engaged in research, cultural and sports activities.
  • In addition, student government is a youth analog of engagement and interaction of people in a team, similar to professional environment which every student will face after graduation. Participating in activities and projects of student organizations, students strengthen a number of valuable skills, including communication, leadership, teamwork, public speaking and many others.
