About

History

The idea to build a marae for Unitec came after the former chief executive officer, Dr John Webster, attended the opening of Manukau Institute of Technology’s marae in 1999. A challenge to build Unitec’s first marae was taken up by the late Sir John Turei, and Haare Williams Unitec’s Pae Arahi at the time, on behalf of the institution.

Services

Student services

There are a number of people on campus who offer support, or can point you in the right direction.

Housing services

  • If you want to live off-campus you could rent an apartment or house in the local area, or rent a room in a shared house.
  • Flatting is renting a room in a shared house. Your room is private but the lounge, kitchen and bathroom are shared. You and your flatmates are responsible for cooking and cleaning, and for paying the bills. Rooms are often unfurnished, so you might need to buy some furniture. You can find cheap options in local second-hand shops.
  • Renting an apartment or house near Unitec is a good option for both families and couples.

Library services

Libraries offer a range of services including print and electronic resources, books, journals, DVDs and newspapers.

ICT services

There’s free wireless access when you’re on campus and within range.

Medical services

Whether you’re feeling unwell, have an injury, need some medicine, or just want to talk to someone about a health problem, visit Te Puna Waiora to chat to our team of qualified Doctors and Registered Nurses.

Student Life

Campus life

Both of our campuses are 100% smoke-free and they constantly buzz with students of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Whichever campus you’re based at, you’ll find there’s always something going on – from social events on campus to action-packed trips out of Auckland with the Experience NZ programme. We also have a wide range of services and facilities on our campuses from shops to childcare.

Sports facilities

  • Our Unitec Sports Centre hosts both a stadium and fully equipped gym, right here on our Mt Albert Campus.
  •  Our osteopathy clinic can help treat back pain, sport injuries, knee problems and more.

Student clubs

There are a range of sporting, social, and study-related clubs that you can join. If you can't find one that suits, you can start one.
