History
Karunya University then known as Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences was established as an Engineering College on the 4th of October 1986, at Siruvani, Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu State by Karunya Educational Trust, founded and promoted by world renowned Evangelist (late) Dr. D.G.S.DHINAKARAN and Dr. PAUL DHINAKARAN, with a divine vision and cherished desire to serve the cause of humanity through Education and Social Service.
Education
True to its name Karunya which means 'Compassion', Karunya University shall be a University with a social concern which will address the problems of humanity through teaching, research and extension in socially relevant areas. The students and faculty of Karunya University will be imbibed with spiritual discernment and a zeal to serve humanity and to eventually become leaders of society.
Research
Karunya University has identified four focal areas of research relevant to the society and environment, namely, water, food, health and renewable energy.
The highlights of research and consultancy programmes of the university are given below:
- 1. Central/coordinated research in thermal management, nanotechnology, renewable energy, aerospace engineering and water treatment techniques, initiated at a total cost of Rs 80 million
- 2. More than 20 externally funded research projects at a total outlay of Rs 60 million
- 3. Short-term research projects to the tune of Rs 1.5 million/year for introducing fresh faculty members and students to research based on a project mode
- 4. Around 400 students pursuing Ph D programme following the UGC norms
- 5. Twenty scholars carrying out Ph D under the Silver Jubilee Fellowship programme
- 6. MoUs with more than 70 reputed academic/ research institutions and industrial houses
- 7. Consultancy works worth Rs 6 million taken up recently for government and international agencies
- 8. Funding to the tune of Rs 40 million from Ministry of Food Processing Industries, and establishment of a NABL accredited laboratory for testing oil products
- 9. Around 50 papers in journals with impact factor during 2011-12 and the publication of Karunya Journal of Research
Career
Karunya has a creditable record of placement of its final year students and graduates. A good number of final year students plan to go for higher studies in India or abroad or turn entrepreneurs. As per recent trends about 80% of eligible final year students, who seek a placement, are placed with reputed organizations at the initiative of the Karunya University prior to their leaving the campus.

Student services
Centre for Extension Activities was established on 11th August, 2007 with the aim of transforming the youth into dynamic and socially responsible personalities and extending the knowledge, technologies for the benefit of the society.
Department tries to integrate academic, research and extension activities so as to benefit students of Karunya as well as neighbouring village communities.
Housing services
A capable hostel administration governs all the activities of the hostel residences; it consists of university staff that caters to the requests and necessities of the students. Each hostel has a minimum of 6-7 staff members who live with the students to guide and direct the students. Apart from the staff each hostel also has a set of care-takers catering to the needs of the students, who can approached at any time of the day. Each hostel is also provided with security personnel who remain on guard round the clock. They all form a part of the hostel administration.
Library services
Welcome to the Central Library, which is one of the central support services of Karunya University. The library homepage will provide electronic access to various full text and bibliographical databases. The Central library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of CD-ROM, On-line databases, e-journals, e-books, audio video cassettes, books, journals, project reports etc.
ICT services
The University Computer Technology Centre offers world class computing facility to the Karunya community. The computing resources include advanced servers and powerful workstations. A state-of-the-art campus network with fiber optic backbone and a 100 Mbps Leased line Internet connection and 1 Gbps from NKN which is one among 400 Universities offer unlimited access of Internet for the students and staff round the clock, for their educational and research needs.

Campus life
Karunya is a fully residential University. Students are housed in thirteen different, well-furnished hostels with all the necessary facilities provided within the campus. Students need not look far for any amenity that they may require during their stay on campus. From a hospital to a bank, from dine-outs to utility stores, from Xerox shops to photo studios, you name it – we have it on campus!
Sports facilities
Karunya provides its students with state of the art arenas and tracks to help students train and develop their sporting skills. All courts and tracks have been made in accordance with the national standards for each game. Both boys and girls have ample opportunities to play and practice any sport of their choice. Coaching sessions are conducted for various sports both in the morning and evening in the sports arena.
Student clubs
Singers, writers, dancers, musicians, actors… everyone has their moment under the sun in Karunya. Apart from clubs such as KALA, Journalism club, Photo and Video Club etc. focussing on extra-curricular activities, students also have the opportunity of doing their bit for the society. With programmes such as Karunya Outreach, students get a chance to go to the nearby villages and teach children and share in their small yet significant moments of joy and happiness.
