The history of the University of Applied Sciences Schmalkalden dates back to the year 1902 when, on 1 July, the “Royal Technical College for Iron and Steel Industry Schmalkalden" was established.
After the Weimar Republic was formed in 1918, the college continued its work as “State Technical College for Iron and Steel Industry Schmalkalden" without any change to its duties.
About 3000 students in the Faculties of Business and Economics, Business Law, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are currently enjoying the numerous opportunities which studying in Schmalkalden offers.

High quality teaching, small class sizes, beautiful setting! HS Schmalkalden is a great option for anyone who wants a quiet and personal approach to learning. The professors are attentive and very friendly. Having previously studied at a much larger institution, I found this school better suited me. If you enjoy nature, good food, and a peaceful setting, you'll love it!
The Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences is located in a very picturesque German town by the name of Schmalkalden, and this university ensures practical education with a social atmosphere that only a small community can present. Below, I have identified both the positive and negative experiences which occurred while at the institution. Positive Experiences: Emphasis on Applied Sciences: The university places immense emphasis on applied sciences. Students are able to get practical exposure through internships and projects. Such application of theoretical knowledge to the real world is invaluable, especially in streams like engineering and business. Small Class Size: As the classes will be small in number, learning would be personalized from professors. This close interaction helps to build up a friendly atmosphere for learning where one can ask questions and discuss topics more readily. International Ambiance: Schmalkalden is an international university with students coming from several countries. This provides a multi-cultural atmosphere, furthering the learning processes and allowing for healthy interaction amongst the students of different backgrounds. Beautiful Campus: The institute finds its home in a very pretty locale, surrounded by nature. The campus of the university is equally well maintained, making it really conducive for studying and relaxing. Accommodating Student Support: The administration is very friendly and eager to help students with academic and personal problems. Such a support system proves to be of immense use for international students who are not meeting up with the challenges of the new culture. Negative Experiences: Limited Course Offerings: While the university excels in many programs, other courses lack variety and/or depth. This could be one of the drawbacks in coming to the University for those who are seeking courses that are specialized. Language Barrier: While many courses are in English, some programs have a tendency to incorporate German quite frequently. Those with no experience in German might find this very hard as they try to work in groups or associate with community activities. Social Life: There are some social events; however, generally speaking, the nightlife or cultural events provided in Schmalkalden are just not as diverse compared to other bigger cities. This may be unsatisfactory for students who prefer the urban atmosphere. Bureaucratic Processes: Some students do have complaints about administrative processes, such as enrollment or course registration. If smoothed out, this could really enhance the student experience significantly.

The Dormitories in Schmalkalden offer 540 rooms. The dorm Blechhammer is located on campus and offers single and group rooms in separate flats with kitchen and sanitary units. The Dromitories at the Martin-Luther-Ring ( 8 Minutes from the Campus) offer single rooms and shared flats for 2-4 people.Prices range from 180 - 217 Euro.
The Cellarius Library’s primary task is to collect, maintain, promote and provide access to resources, which serve the university community and support their research, learning and teaching. Our collections can be borrowed by wider public and can be requested via the Inter Library Loans service.
