History
Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.
Education
Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south.
Research
Centre for Research is functioning from the inception of Anna University on 4th September 1978, offering research programmes in different branches of Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Planning, Science & Humanities and Management Sciences leading to award of Ph.D. and M.S. (By Research) degrees. Faculty members are actively pursuing interdisciplinary and socially relevant research in thrust areas with state–of–the–art equipments in addition to teaching, consultancy and extension activities.

Student services
The Anna University ,which is of the affiliated type is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.
Library services
The University Library, which has been established in the year 1978 gained autonomy from December 2000. It is housed in a three storeyed new Building located at the eastern side in the main campus. The total area of the Library building is about 4122 sq.m. 30 video cameras are placed at strategic points in the library for surveillance.
Medical services
Health Centre facilities with attached Inpatient Ward are available at the Main Campus and at MIT campus. Consultation is free for all the students and employees.The Centre provides outpatient treatment both in the morning and evening.
Sports facilities
The Anna University Sports Board ensuring the smooth and efficient conduct of Zonal / Inter-Zonal tournaments involving all the institutions under Anna University, the Anna University Sports Board is constituted with the Vice-Chancellor as President. The members of the Board include Deans / Principals of Constituent and Affiliated Colleges, Faculty members, Physical Directors and Eminent Sports Persons, as per the norms approved by the Syndicate of the University.
Accreditation
Anna University was reaccredited by NAAC in the year 2014 with A grade(CGPA 3.46 out of 4). The IQAC of Anna University, since its inception, has been consistently and actively involved in quality sustenance and quality enhancement activities.
