History
The history of the university dates back to 1953, when it was established as a teachers’ college. As the institution gradually expanded, it eventually became the University of Ostrava on September 28, 1991. The newly founded university comprised the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Arts. Shortly afterward, a Faculty of Medicine was added.
Education
The University of Ostrava (UO) is a public research university educating nearly 9,000 students in six faculties:
- Faculty of Science (BIology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Mathematics, IT)
- Faculty of Medicine (General Medicine, Nusring, Public Healthcare, Medical Rescue, Therapeutic Fields)
- Faculty of Arts (History, Languages, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Sciences)
- Faculty of Social Studies (Social work, Social Policy, Health & Social Care)
- Faculty of Fine Arts (Visual - Painting & Sculpture, Drawing & Graphics, New Media, Musical - Brass & String Instruments, Solo Singing)
- Faculty of Education (Pre-school Education, Secondary School Teaching, Special and Social Pedagogy, Human Motion Studies)
Research
The UO must become an equal partner of top-ranking universities and other scientific institutions both in the Czech Republic and abroad. To this end, the university will promote cooperation with other universities and research institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad with aim to transfer experience and to share teaching, research, and development capacities. Although it is important to focus predominantly on the main directions of research in which the UO achieves excellent results at an international level, it is also necessary to promote creative areas which are capable of solving crucial social problems.

Practice, Experience, & Global Exposure
My study experience at the University of Ostrava has been highly enriching, particularly due to the strong combination of academic theory, practical training, and international opportunities. What I appreciated most was the emphasis on practice and real-life application. Many courses included internships, field practice, and lectures based on case studies, which helped me understand how psychological theories function in real professional contexts. I also valued the wide range of international opportunities, especially Erasmus+ exchanges and volunteering programmes, including options to participate in projects in Africa. These experiences fostered my intercultural sensitivity, adaptability, and social responsibility. Another strong aspect was the supportive academic environment. Lecturers were generally approachable, open to discussion, and willing to connect theory with current professional practice. Guest lectures and interdisciplinary workshops further enriched my studies and allowed me to explore psychology from multiple perspectives. In terms of improvement, some courses could benefit from even greater international integration, such as more subjects taught in English or increased collaboration with visiting international lecturers. Additionally, expanding opportunities for long-term practical placements abroad could further strengthen students’ professional preparation. Overall, I would summarise my study experience at the University of Ostrava as solid, practice-oriented, and value-driven. It provided me with a strong academic foundation, meaningful practical experience, and the motivation to continue my studies in an international environment.
International Student Experience
The University of Ostravas Department of English and American Studies stands out for its exceptional faculty. The professors arent just knowledgeable in their fieldsthey bring energy, creativity, and a genuine passion for teaching that makes learning both engaging and enjoyable. Whether its unraveling the intricacies of phonetics, diving into literary masterpieces, or analyzing cultural shifts in American history, the courses are designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. What truly sets the department apart is the way the faculty makes complex subjects feel approachable. Discussions are lively, lessons are interactive, and theres a strong sense of encouragement for students to express their ideas. However, for international students who arent part of the Erasmus exchange program, the level of institutional support can feel lacking. Navigating academic requirements, administrative processes, and student life can be a challenge without additional guidance. That said, for those who seek both challenges and joy in the pursuit of knowledge, this department is an excellent choice. The intellectually stimulating environment, combined with engaging discussions and passionate professors, makes it a rewarding place to study for those eager to push their academic boundaries.
Cozy and friendly university experience
As mentioned in the title of my review, I had quite close experience during my studies. The department is not very big, which brings its advantages and disadvantages. My main point is that I am very pleased with how every teacher is open to help students, there is always a possibility to make an appointment with any teacher and get help you need. While the compactness of the department of mathematics acquire academic positives, at the same time it may be felt as a limitation in terms of communication with other students, hard to find individuals with whom you can be friends. However, the university makes lots of events where students from all faculties can come and enjoy time together.
