History
Ryukoku University was established as a Buddhist seminary called “Gakuryo” (Boarding School) in the precincts of Nishi-Hongwanji Temple by its 13th abbot, Ryonyo, for the promotion of research and Shin Buddhism education. Being older than Shoheiko, the official Edo Shogunate school, Ryukoku is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Japan.
Education
Ryukoku University inherits the academic achievements of our predecessors in our history of more than 370 years. The fruits of our international activities are also abundant and continue to grow. Under the principles of our school motto of “Symbiosis Harmony,” we are fully aware that the promotion of global education is one of the most important tasks for us as a university today.
Research
Ryukoku University is developing a global standard for research which will create the scientific technology and culture of the 21st century. In looking at today and towards the future, we are engaged in the promotion of arts and sciences which society is seeking, through research utilizing traditional and historical research resources which are centered on " Buddhism" as the foundation upon which Ryukoku was established, the research to create scientific technology for the next generation under the most advanced research environment, and also research in conjunction with the local community and the global society.

Its friendly staff are available to assist and advise on career-related enquiries and the Center also includes a large collection of information on employers and career opportunities; job-seeking reference materials and computer terminals to search for job opportunities online.

Student services
All students have access to excellent academic facilities and services such as a medical insurance provided by Japanese government (Fee required), on-campus health clinics, foreign student lounges, personal counseling, student Co-op, and discounts on long distance transport etc.
Housing services
Ryukoku University provides rooms for approximately 200 students in 5 dormitories. Japanese student tutors also live in these dormitories to assist international students with day-to-day living and studies
Library services
The Fukakusa library is not only proud of its huge number of books but also its many rare collections. It is especially renowned worldwide for its Nagao Collection of approximately 16,300 volumes of books on corporate, organizational and industrial histories.
Medical services
Health centers are available on each campus to provide for your healthcare-related needs.If you present your National Health Insurance card at the time of treatment,Ryukoku university will subsidise 20% of the 30% deductible.
Campus life
Fukakusa campus is situated in Kyoto’s Fushimi Ward, southeast of Kyoto Station, the red-brick buildings of the Fukakusa Campus were opened in 1960 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Shinran Shonin’s death.Omiya campus is located on the grounds of the birthplace of Ryukoku University, Omiya Campus houses the Faculty of Letters, Graduate School of Letters, and Graduate School of Practical Shin Buddhist Studies.Seta campus opened in 1989 as part of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of Ryukoku University’s founding.
Sports facilities
Sports are considered an important part of our education here at Ryukoku University. At Ryukoku University, we believe in providing the best environment for our students to strengthen their academic knowledge, and at the same time, develop their potential in sports to the fullest. To achieve this, we have two well equipped training rooms (gyms), one in Fukakusa campus and one in Seta campus, for our students to build up their physical body, a baseball field in our Seta campus, as well as Tennis courts, (in both campuses) for our students to play sports during their leisure time.
