Became a Public University in 1986, although its history also includes a heritage received from its predecessor, the Vila Real Polytechnic Institute, created in 1973. This Institute took on a relevant role in the development of the region, and in September 1979, it was converted into the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Higher Education Institute.
UTAD offers a wide assortment of programme studies ranging from graduation to masters and doctorates within different study areas distributed by 5 schools: Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences, Human and Social Sciences, Sciences and Technology, Life and Environment Sciences and Vila Real Higher Education Nursing School.

GRIM (International Office) is the service in UTAD that supports students, teachers and staff to go abroad under different mobility programmes and cooperation agreements. We also support all incoming mobilities.
The Documentation and Library service’s foremost goal is to support investigation, knowledge and information, making all resources accessible so there can be a better development and cultural citizen’s upbringing.
According to UTAD’s new statutes, the IT and Communication Services have replaced the former IT Centre.
Internet Access at UTAD is ensured by these services, but the Internet Connection is provided by the National Foundation for Scientific Computing (Fundação de Cáculo Científico Nacional), of which UTAD is a member.
