University of Papua New Guinea

The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) is dedicated to providing quality education, research, and service to Papua New Guinea and our region.

The road towards transforming a University in a developing country into one capable of delivering quality education within the context and expectations of modernization and globalization is a path full of extraordinary challenges, and unique rewards.

A University education in a developing country is the foundation necessary to grow and flourish in the complex and dynamic environment that is our world today. The UPNG provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and values a graduate will require to become a useful member of society, and to advance the human values in the modern world. An education at the UPNG is a life-long investment.

Research was initially a section of the Department of Planning and Development and later transferred to the Centre for Research and Post-Graduate Studies, when the later was created in 2002 as a part of the University's restructure. Post-Graduate programmes of the Centre were entrusted to respective schools and the Research wing was formed as the Office of Research when the Centre for Research and Post-Graduate studies was abolished in 2007.

The Office of the Research coordinates research establishments and research clusters. The University research establishments include:

• Centre for Climate Change & Sustainable Development
• Centre for Disaster Reduction
• Melanesian and Pacific Studies
• Melanesian Institute of Art and Communication
• Motupore Island Research Centre
• Micronutrient Laboratory
• Molecular Biodiscovery and Biomedicines Laboratory
• Natural Products and Chemical Analysis Laboratory
• Traditional Medicine Database Unit and
• Snake Venom Research Unit
