As a result the number of patients in the region admitted to hospital with ‘tropical’ diseases soared. Sir Alfred Jones donated £350 to set up a School of Tropical Medicine to investigate these outbreaks. In its first decades LSTM relied on the facilities of University College, now known as the University of Liverpool.
LSTM was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine
LSTM offers a wide range of courses from one day laboratory courses through to Master’s programmes and PhDs.
Research degrees, Master’s degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates lead to University of Liverpool awards. Other courses are delivered as part of LSTM's portfolio of professional programmes. These are non credit-bearing and many are accredited by external professional bodies.
LSTM has been at the forefront of research into infectious, debilitating and disabling diseases worldwide since 1898. Our research continues to improve the health of the world's poorest people, with a research portfolio well over £210 million.
A research degree involves a period of research study in an area appropriate to the needs of the particular student, followed by the submission of a thesis. LSTM welcome applications from Self Funding students. You can send your Research Degree Applications at any time of the year. In 2015/16, we currently have 128 Postgraduate Research (PGR) students in LSTM from 39 different countries.
The Global Student Satisfaction Awards empower students across the globe to determine the best universities of 2021. Universities with a score above 4.0 (out of 5) in any of the 8 award categories, receive Badges of Excellence. Congratulations!
The accommodation available to you will depend on a number of factors including the duration of your course, your budget and your personal circumstances/ preferences. If you are undertaking one of our short courses then you will normally be sent a list of hotels in Liverpool. Students undertaking Professional Diplomas, Masters Degrees and PhD programmes will have a greater choice of accommodation options available to them (examples include: student halls, lodgings, room in a shared student house). LSTM does not possess its own accommodation. Therefore, our student accommodation provision is, on the whole, an information and advice service.
The LSTM Library has access to a wide selection of research materials, both print and online. It also provides a range of services in a modern, zoned study environment. Our library is particularly strong in the fields of tropical diseases, epidemiology, humanitarianism, entomology, parasitology, paediatrics and reproductive health including all associated biological, medical and vetinary sciences.
The IT Department have recently transferred systems away from the University of Liverpool and have taken the opportunity to deploy many new technologies including Office 365 and Sharepoint online as well as introducing Cloud applications for many corporate systems.
A travel health service, providing pre-travel advice and post-travel consultations to the public and healthcare professionals. Post-travel LSTM provides clinical services through the NHS for tropical medicine, both in-patient and out-patient. The out-patient clinic is on site and patients requiring in-patient care are admitted to the Regional Infectious Disease Unit.
It was vey enthusthiastic experience regarding my field
I was expected to start on september 2020 however, due to the lack of financial support they arranged me with changing the year, which is this coming september 2021. I really like this flexibility
My study experience was a little bit challenging but yet very exciting. At the satrt, there was so much work to do , then , step by step I managed to arrange my study material and to excel in each step of the way.
