History
As a result the number of patients in the region admitted to hospital with ‘tropical’ diseases soared. Sir Alfred Jones donated £350 to set up a School of Tropical Medicine to investigate these outbreaks. In its first decades LSTM relied on the facilities of University College, now known as the University of Liverpool.
Education
LSTM was the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine
LSTM offers a wide range of courses from one day laboratory courses through to Master’s programmes and PhDs.
Research degrees, Master’s degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Postgraduate Certificates lead to University of Liverpool awards. Other courses are delivered as part of LSTM's portfolio of professional programmes. These are non credit-bearing and many are accredited by external professional bodies.
Research
LSTM has been at the forefront of research into infectious, debilitating and disabling diseases worldwide since 1898. Our research continues to improve the health of the world's poorest people, with a research portfolio well over £210 million.
A research degree involves a period of research study in an area appropriate to the needs of the particular student, followed by the submission of a thesis. LSTM welcome applications from Self Funding students. You can send your Research Degree Applications at any time of the year. In 2015/16, we currently have 128 Postgraduate Research (PGR) students in LSTM from 39 different countries.
