North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power(NCWU; Code:10078) was founded in 1951 first by the name of Beijing Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in Beijing under the administration of the Ministry of Water Resources and Power Industry. The school changed its name to North China Institute of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1978 and was relocated to Zhengzhou City, Henan Province in 1990. Since the year 2000, it has been jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources and Henan provincial government and primarily administrated by Henan Province. In 2013, the school was renamed as North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power.
NCWU is an engineering-oriented comprehensive full-time public university covering academic faculties of science, engineering, agriculture, management, economics, liberal arts and law. It mainly enrolls full-time undergraduate and full-time postgraduate students, it trains students for 3-year diploma as well.
NCWU occupies a land area of 155 hectares and its floor area reaches 680,000 square meters. The university library owns a collection of more than 2 million books, and the total value of equipment amounts to 210 million RMB. Currently, there are 20,000 full-time students of different educational levels on campus and the number of teaching and administrative staff totals 1600. NCWU owns a quality and balanced faculty which includes 4 double-hiring academicians, 600 professors and assistant professors. Moreover, nearly 1000 teaching staff has master or doctor degree.
NCWU encompasses 20 teaching units including schools of Water Conservancy Engineering, Resource & Environment, Civil Engineering and Communication, Mechanical Engineering, Electric Power, Environmental and Municipal Engineering, Management and Economics, Architecture, Mathematics and Information Science, Information Engineering, Software, Foreign Language, Law, Ideological and Political Education, International Education and Continuing Education, PE Department, Postgraduate Department, Arts Center and Office of TV Education. There are also 65 research institutions in NCWU such as Research Institute of Steel Structures, Yellow River Institute of Sciences, Research Institute of Urban Water Affairs, Institute of Geotechnical Engineering and Hydraulic Structures, Institute of Broad-spectrum Philosophy and Research Center for Art Education.
NCWU has 13 key disciplines at provincial level, 5 provincial and ministerial- level key laboratories, 4 academician workstations, 12 first-tier and 58 second-tier master degree programs and 60 undergraduate programs.
NCWU is authorized to grant doctoral degrees and is among the first group of universities empowered by the State Council to issue master degrees. Also, it is one of the first universities qualified to enroll master degree applicants exempt from the admission exams. In Henan Province, NCWU is the only university that can independently hold admission exams to recruit its own master degree applicants. Moreover, it exclusively undertakes the national “Ethnic Minority High-level Talent Program” within the whole province. Now, students can pursue the Equivalent Education Degrees and Professional Master Degrees in NCWU as well.
Honorably, NCWU is evaluated as Excellent by the Ministry of Education and is one of the key universities that enjoy strong support from the Henan provincial government.
