Yokohama School of Commerce then developed into Yokohama City College of Commerce (Y college), which is the origin of Yokohama City University. Another origin of YCU is Juzen Hospital of Nogeyama in 1874. Although Yokohama was the center of western medicine at that time, there was no hospital for the citizens.

Housing services

We offer a tutor system for newly arrived exchange students, housing support, scholarship related assistance, and consultation and information services for international students.

Library services

Yokohama City University Library and Information Center (Library) offers access to our academic materials that are not available at public libraries in Kanagawa Prefecture for those who are engaged in research and academic activities in the community. The Library Access for Residents service allows you to borrow library materials and browse materials in the library.

ICT services

RSS (Rich Site Summary, or Really Simple Syndication, or RDF Site Summary) is an XML-based format for structuring and describing meta-data such as headlines or a summary of a website.

RSS is used to release and provide updated information on a website to users. Software such as an RSS reader allows users to find the latest information on a website without having to visit that site directly.

Sports facilities

The swimming pool is available for public use during times when it is not otherwise being used for university lessons or for extracurricular activities. Individuals from junior high school age and above are welcome. The swimming pool is open on Sundays and Public Holidays (with the exception of the New Year Holiday Period and Transferred National Holidays) with each day being divided into three time blocks for which separate charges apply.


Our university has been ranked 2nd nationally by Times Higher Education in their "Best Small Universities 2016" list.
