History
Established in 1924, the Private Qingdao University (now known as Ocean University of China) was the very first modern institution of higher education established by the Chinese in Shandong Province. Forty engineering and business students enrolled in the university’s inaugural year, and undertook their education on the site of the former German Bismarck Barracks.

Research
OUC boasts a number of national-level research institutions, including the National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology, the Research Center for the Marine Development of China and the National Research Center for Marine Pharmaceutical Engineering Technology. The university is also in the top 1% of the most-cited universities and scientific institutions in nine research fields (ESI): plant and animal science, earth science, engineering, chemistry, agricultural sciences, materials science, biology and biochemistry, environmental science and ecology, and pharmacology and toxicology. As a result it is recognized as the driving force behind China’s marine research and application.

University Ranking
Library services
- The library of Ocean University of China (OUC) is located in two separate campuses, namely, Yushan and Laoshan.
- By the end of 2018, the library houses approximately 2.4million paper books and documents, 4.0million eBooks, over 30,000 periodicals in Chinese or foreign languages, and 303 electronic databases in Chinese or foreign languages.
ICT services
The campus e-Card System is a very important application of the campus network, which is used to provide such services as catering, campus shopping, on-campus health care, library services, login to the Internet, and access control.
Medical services
OUC Infirmary is a healthcare center serving the health and wellness of the entire OUC community. It is a legitimate, non-governmental and non-profit community-level hospital, which is also a designated institution for medical insurance in Qingdao.
Campus life
We have four campuses – Yushan, Fushan, Laoshan and Huangdao, which is currently under construction – all of which are united under our motto “Ocean embraces all streams; exploring promises reaching far.”
Student clubs
Students are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities and join the student societies of the university. Ocean University of China has more than 80 student societies, covering five domains, namely, science and technology, physical training, humanities, arts, and public welfare.
It is accredited by Ministry of Education of The People's Republic of China.
