The idea of founding an Estonian establishment of musical education emerged on the eve of World War I. It began in the form of a mixed choir of the Estonian Society Musical Department (EMD). The assembly of the Estonia Society then decided on November 17, 1918, to create the Tallinn Higher Music School, the opening ceremony of which took place on September 28, 1919, in the Estonia Concert Hall.
The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre is an educational, cultural and scientific research establishment which provides the option of studying in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programme in the study field of arts, as well as the field of teacher training and educational sciences.
The EAMT actively develops international cooperation and is open to new and interdisciplinary curricula, creative ideas and research projects.
Each student has the right to academic and career counselling at EAMT. The main aspects of the academic life and career development are covered within the first weeks of studies in the subject “Introduction to University Studies and Professional Life”. Among other topics, the students are introduced to how to get practical advice relating to various academic and professional matters throughout their studies.
The Career advisor can help the students with decisions related to career planning as well as providing assistance in finding professional engagements, preparing for job interviews etc.

In the new building of EAM there are 7 500 square meters of usable space designed and built especially for the higher musical educational establishment. Special mention should be made of EAM’s chamber hall, which seats 130–200, a choir class combined with a big auditorium for 77 students, an audition room for 40 persons with a new baroque organ, opera studio, electronic music lab, recording studio, library with all music listening and computer facilities, and dining room. The building meets the highest acoustical requirements for its soundproof rooms. To sum up, it is among the most modern educational music buildings in the world.
The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre is the first institutionally accredited university in Estonia.
I was a part of the first generation of CPPM (Contemporary Physical Performance Making) at Estonian Academy of Music and Theater. The course was super intensive - we worked with many guest artists and it was great to work with them in a way that we did, as we were the part of their company. It allowed us to completely embrace their artistic practice. It required openness...
I think this is the best university in South Africa in the faculty of music it has produced many students who are abroad and doing so well.
Everything is great, of course nothing is perfect, but if you think relatively, such an experience... Facilities, most of the teachers, attentiveness to the students requests, good price adn living conditions, supportive institution... I will miss it A LOT. 100% recommended.
