A very fulfilling time
Yamagata is a beautiful, serene and peaceful place with cold, snowy winters and really hot summers. Its beauty just cannot be explained in words! With buses running only once every hour, it might not have been the most convenient place, but that didn’t mean there was nothing to do there. Almost everyone was living around the campus, so it was easy to invite friends to events and activities. We went camping, had dumpling parties, had snowball fights, and participated in local festivals and cultural tours. I was also part of the International community and organized events ranging from sports days, cherry blossom viewing, and treasure hunts to Halloween and Christmas parties, cooking competitions, and even an escape-style game during a BBQ camp. Because of its location, there were many free opportunities for students to go cherry/strawberry/apple-pickings, learn winter sports and go on boat tours. Of course, it wasn’t all just fun and games. There were nights when I struggled with classes, research and academic conferences but the laboratory I joined was a life-changing one, with teachers who guided me through patiently and labmates who were kind and outgoing. Despite the difficulties I’ve faced, all I remember is the drinking parties, badminton, mahjong, trips, horror movie nights and VR games. Looking back, my time in Japan has been one of the most valuable and irreplaceable experiences of my life.
