Universidad Ana G. Mendez Carolina
The university is a bit above average. The classes were promising and you would learn a lot, the professors weren’t that flexible with helping students understand subjects as much, and most of the directors of the union don’t really care about the students but about the profits that they make from the students. I personally love that I finished my bachelors degree there, but the students and a handful of professors make the time worthwhile. In an environment where I want to learn the subjects that I’m paying for the least I would want is someone who actually knows what they are teaching.
Public university really challenges you!
The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is the best university of Puerto Rico, especially the Mayagüez and Rio Piedras Campus, but it is certainly a roller coaster to study in. You would have student and administration strikes at least once a year, and since it is located in a tropical island, huracanes and storms play a major role in the interruptions of your studies as well. I spent 4 1/2 years in the UPR and I was victim of 7 strikes. The professors in the Rio Piedras Campus are really good, they teach you what you need too learn and go beyond for you to really understand the material. Overall, I would give my experience of studying in the UPR-Rio Piedras Campus an 8/10, just because studying Chemistry really took out years of my life haha!
In the Good Times and The Bad
Those who study at UPR end up having a love/ hate relationship with the institution. It is the only public university in Puerto Rico and therefore has very close ties to the government and all the pros and cons that come with that . However , it is a historic university known for creating the most brilliant minds in the island . The community in UPR( particularly the campus located in Aguadilla)is tight knit and the professors are able to have a great mentor relationship with their students given the small size of the classes . They have a food pantry for low income students , offer great scholarships, and have free tutoring available .The only thing I will criticize is the outdated system of enrolling for classes . Many students (including myself) have gotten full blown panic attacks because of how difficult and tedious it is to enroll for classes. Aside from that , it is a great university known to be “for the people” . Anybody who attends feels like they are a part of the very important history of Puerto Rico .
