Welcome to CERGE-EI (Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute), a joint workplace of Charles University and the Economics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, a unique partnership designed to promote modern education and research in economics located in a beautiful Central European metropolis – Prague.

Master's Programmes



In 1990, a core group of funders including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, USAID and the Pew Charitable Trusts had agreed to support a doctoral program at Charles University provided it served not only Czechoslovakia, but the entire transition region. Implementation took an additional year. 


CERGE-EI's mission:

  • Build a recognized center of excellence and innovation in economics research and education.
  • Expand the pool of elite economists in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond to serve the public interest.
  • Produce and disseminate policy oriented economics research.


CERGE-EI faculty and researchers have established a remarkable record of professional careers and publications in top economics and policy-oriented journals. 

CERGE-EI researchers have been active as recognized experts in areas including labor market functioning, taxation, social policies and poverty reduction, R&D policies, stock market regulation, macroeconomics analysis including forecasting, public budgeting, pension schemes and reforms, health economics, and economics of public regulations.

Housing services

CERGE-EI students may apply for accommodation in the Charles University dormitories, which are generally located in the suburbs (about 45 minutes from CERGE-EI by public transport). Cost is approximately CZK 3,000 per month for a bed in a double room.

Library services

Established in 1992, the Jan Kmenta CERGE-EI Library has grown into a rich resource of modern economics literature, housing an extensive international collection of books, journals and databases. Today it is considered the best library of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe and, as such, is an important center for library services in Economics.
