VIA University College  is one of Denmark’s six university colleges (similar to universities of applied science). Our programmes, courses and research focus on professional practice in areas such as healthcare, teaching, social education, engineering, business and design.

History

VIA University College was established in 2008 as a result of a number of mergers of institutions of higher education. Today, VIA is one of the country’s six university colleges, covering the Central Denmark Region.

Education

Our programmes build on strong Danish traditions for educating students in cooperation with professional practice. Some programmes, like teaching, nursing and social education going back more than 100 years. They still play an important role in developing the world known Danish welfare society and creating growth and innovation in private industries.

As the world becomes more global, VIA increasingly takes an international approach to education and research. Today, we have an emphasis on intercultural learning in our programmes and we offer student and staff exchange, summer schools and research projects.

Research

In 2013, the Danish university colleges gained official status as research institutions. We follow the same scientific standards as traditional universities but focus on applied research.

We take particular pride in our close collaboration with professional practice. As a result, the knowledge we produce helps solve real challenges for public and private organisations – in Denmark and internationally.

Today, VIA has 9 research centres within diverse academic areas such as healthcare and rehabilitation, pedagogy, society studies, textile, design and circularity, and animation, film and digital processes.

Career

Career Service Centre offers free career advice for students at all semesters. From your first day on campus, our consultants can advise you on:

  • How to find a student job, internship and full time job in Denmark?
  • How to write a CV and cover letter adapted to the Danish job market?
  • How does Danish job market work?
  • How to get in touch with businesses and organisations for collaboration on projects and internships?

You can book a time for career counselling with us on Campus Aarhus C, Herning and Horsens.

Connects global students

Recommended for future students. It provides different programs for students in diverse areas such as business, software engineering, civil engineering, architectural technologies, etc. The campus hosts international students from all around the world and creates an invaluable opportunity to connect with people from different cultures. There are social facilities organized by the university occasionally for students to make their journey even more enjoyable and fun.

Supportive environment

Via is very open and a supportive place. Never had a single issue with any of the staff or other students. Campus is new, offering everything you need. We even have fridges. Teachers are always helpful and open for debates. Grades are fair and always explained why and what.

Unbalanced program content

I'm not very content with the academic side of things. The bachelor's program includes several subjects that feel unnecessary and unrelated. While the school itself is nice overall, I have to say that compared to my previous studies, I've been quite disappointed.

Housing services

There are multiple accommodation options in VIA’s campus cities – dormitories, private apartments, house sharing – depending on preference and the length of your stay. Dormitories and house sharing offer great opportunities for socialising and meeting new friends and are more affordable. On the other hand, you own apartment will provide privacy and freedom. In Denmark, on-campus student accommodation provided by universities and colleges is not available, as is the case in many other countries. This means that students are responsible for finding housing on their own.

Library services

In addition to VIA’s campus libraries, the Danish public libraries are worth a visit. Lending of books, journals, films, music and computer games is free and often libraries also host many free events such as film screenings, theatre performances etc.

ICT services

All our campuses have free wifi for students. Students are required to provide their own computers and requirements for software etc. vary from programme to programme.

Medical services

Overall, the Danish healthcare system is tax-funded, of high quality, and all residents are entitled to free or subsidised healthcare services, including international students.

The system is characterised by its emphasis on preventive care, patient-centred care, and collaboration between healthcare providers.

Campus life

VIA has a total of eight campuses across the Central region of Denmark.

  • Herning (home to our English-taught programmes in Design and Business)
  • Holstebro
  • Horsens (home to our English-taught programmes in Engineering and Architectural Technology and Construction Management)
  • Randers
  • Silkeborg
  • Viborg
  • Aarhus C
  • Aarhus N

Sports facilities

In general, Denmark is home to a range of associations and clubs. By joining a local dance club, football team or board game association, you find an easy way to meet the Danes while enjoying your favorite free-time activity.

Student clubs

All our campuses are home to a range of student associations from cafés to sport clubs and music clubs. Students can join and also start their own association with guidance from VIA.

The local student union arranges many different activities on campus such as afternoon workshops and student parties.

Accreditation

All programmes are accredited by the Danish Accreditation Council. VIA is a certified holder of an ERASMUS+ charter.
