Overview
Goethe University Frankfurt's Master of Science in Molecular Medicine primary goal is to provide advanced training in the molecular and cellular principles of human organ system function, as well as the pathogenesis and therapy of human diseases. The program focuses on drug research, cardiovascular research, and oncology and immunology. The program provides specialized training and instruction in various methodological and conceptual areas, equipping students to independently conduct basic scientific and clinical-translational research in molecular medicine. The master's degree program in molecular medicine is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop independent scientific thinking and act responsibly as scientists.
Embedded into the campus Niederrad of the University Hospital at Frankfurt am Main, the master program will convey a thorough understanding of the molecular function of human organ systems, including the molecular principles of pathogenesis of human diseases and their therapies. Students will learn the principles, concepts and methods of experimental and clinical research. A special focus will be laid on the key research areas at the Faculty of Medicine, i.e. cardiovascular research, oncology/immunology and molecular pharmacology. A broad-ranged offer of modules will equip students with an extended knowledge in molecular medicine as well as sustained laboratory skills, and, at the same time, provide deep insights into special and topical aspects of molecular medicine. Seminars on current research will familiarise the students with topical international research. Teaching in regulatory affairs will inform students on guidelines for laboratory work and clinical studies. In addition, soft skills and basic broadly applying laboratory skills are taught. It is the aim of the program to promote students to develop into independent, successful researchers with the ability to critically evaluate experimental results and to responsibly contribute to social and scientific progress.
As a research-based master program, modules will not only provide theoretical training but also extensive practical training, with both practical courses and lab rotations. This combination will guarantee sufficient experience for a successful master thesis.
Key Skills Acquired during the Master Program
The Master program equips the students with a number of key skills valuable for a wide variety of career paths, e.g:
- a profound understanding of scientific theories, their potency and constraints
- the ability to independently plan experiments, to employ modern techniques and to evaluate the significance of experimental data
- the ability to gain information about a specific topic from appropriate sources in a fast and adequate manner
- the ability to present and discuss complex topics in English
- team working
- the ability to evaluate the social, ethical, economical and judicial impact of medical research and the resulting new therapies on society
Career Oppurtunities
After completion of the master program (degree: Master of Science) graduates may pursue a doctorate to continue a career in academic research or aim towards a position in biomedical or pharmaceutical industry.
