Overview

The Health Sciences (MHSc) degree program at the University of British Columbia is adapted towards students who have an MD or equivalent (e.g., dentistry or veterinary medicine), and want to gain skills in applying epidemiological and statistical methods to evaluating and conducting clinical research.

Students pursue course work in clinical research skills. These skills will include epidemiological design and analysis, systematic reviews, clinical trial design, data analysis and presentation.

Qualitative as well as program and economic evaluation methodology courses are available. The underlying precepts for all courses are critical thinking skills. There will be an opportunity to explore health policy and population health concepts through a limited number of electives that are part of the program.

What makes the program unique?

This is the only program in B.C. that offers formal training in clinical research methods to MDs (and equivalents). The program is ideally suited for residents, fellows, junior faculty and others who wish to incorporate clinical research into their career plans. The program is flexible and can be done on a part-time basis, allowing students to continue their clinical training or practice, while in the program.

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Many programs require a statement of interest, sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

Applicants should browse faculty profiles and indicate in their application who they are interested in working with. However, it is not necessary for applicants to contact faculty members prior to their application.

Permanent Residents of Canada must provide a clear photocopy of both sides of the Permanent Resident card.
