Overview
The Creative Writing MFA at the University of British Columbia is a comprehensive studio-based programme designed to foster literary excellence through intensive workshop-based learning. This degree places the student's original creative work at the centre of the curriculum, supported by rigorous peer review and expert faculty guidance. Candidates are encouraged to explore multiple genres to develop a versatile and professional writing practice.
Why Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia?
As the first and largest programme of its kind in Canada, this department is internationally recognised for its multi-genre approach to instruction. Unlike traditional English degrees that focus on the study of literature, this Fine Arts programme emphasises the active practice of writing. Students benefit from a diverse community of peers and a faculty comprised of distinguished, working authors.
The School of Creative Writing offers an unparalleled breadth of study, with 12 distinct genres available. This variety allows writers to "cross-train" in different forms, from traditional poetry and fiction to contemporary media such as podcasting and graphic novels. The programme's long-standing history of over 50 years ensures a deep connection to cultural industries and a legacy of successful alumni.

Because the MFA is considered a terminal degree in the field, many graduates pursue teaching positions at universities and colleges.
