Arabic Studies from The American University in Cairo has been engaging students in the material culture of Islamic civilizations through a range of art-his­torical and theoretical perspectives. Our breadth of course offerings and access to the monuments we teach is unique among English-language programs in the field.  


Arabic Studies from The American University in Cairo offers classes on both classical (500-1850) and modern (1850 to present) Arabic literature including seminars on topics as diverse as the development of prose, the tradition of classical Arabic poetry, the Arabic rhetorical and literary-critical tradition, modern Arabic novels, Arabic drama, Arab cinema, issues in literary and cultural translation and colloquial and folk Arabic literature.

Students at Arabic Studies from The American University in Cairo will gain knowledge in:

  • the rise of Islam and Arab conquests, 
  • Islamic political theory, 
  • economic, social and cultural history of the Mamluk and Ottoman empires, 
  • International and Red Sea trade networks, 
  • war and diplomacy, 
  • literacy and book culture, 
  • protest and dissent in Middle Eastern history, 
  • colonialism and nation-building in the modern Middle East.

General requirements

  • Applicants for graduate study must have an accredited Bachelor’s degree with an academic record at a level sufficient to qualify for full or provisional admission. 
  • An online application for graduate studies
  • Online payment of the application fee
  • A statement of purpose 
  • An updated resume (CV)  
  • At least two online letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic or professional background
  • Official academic records, of which one must be a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with proof of degree completion. 
  • Satisfactory English language proficiency test results
  • Graduate students may be asked to demonstrate minimum competency in the use of computers and academic libraries as they relate to graduate study and research
  • One recent passport size photograph (a clear electronic copy)
