Most biological disciplines rely on analyses at the molecular level and the use of molecular biology to manipulate genes and proteins. Our MSc will give you the training necessary to become an active and engaged researcher in this field.

About

You’ll spend a large part of your course researching real biological problems in a research-active laboratory, relying on close interaction with your supervisor and becoming part of their research group.

You’ll benefit from our state-of-the-art facilities, including the Sussex Centre for Advanced Microscopy.

Key facts

  • We were ranked 8th in the UK for research output in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).
  • Sussex belongs to the Barts and Brighton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, driving the development of new anticancer treatments across the UK.
  • Our collaborative links with the MRC Genome Damage and Stability Centre, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and Sussex Neuroscience offer exciting opportunities for you to experience cutting-edge research projects across many areas of modern bioscience.

Careers

With a focus on learning and practicing laboratory skills, this MSc is a perfect platform for a research career.

Many graduates continue their studies as PhD students, often at Sussex, while others follow careers in the pharmaceutical industry and research institutes.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    88

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120. Read more about TOEFL iBT ®.

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score (Grade B2):

    176

C1 Advanced is a Cambridge English Qualification. It reports on the Cambridge English Scale between 142 and 210. You will receive a separate score for each of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) and for Use of English. These five scores are averaged to give you an overall result for the exam. Universities and colleges may ask you to achieve a specific score, either overall or for a particular skill.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Lower Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Lower Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

A lower second-class (2.2) undergraduate honours degree or above in a relevant science (such as genetics, cell biology, biology), computing or mathematics subject.
