Overview
The Medical Science (CIMR) programme from the University of Cambridge students receive expert training in state-of-the-art technologies, through our core research facilities and also have diverse opportunities to communicate their research findings and develop collaborative networks at, for example, the annual CIMR research retreat.
CIMR welcomes applications from graduates to undertake research towards an MPhil in any of the labs based in CIMR. Applicants are encouraged to contact potential supervisors directly in the first instance, to discuss their application and funding possibilities.
At the end of the Medical Science (CIMR) programme offered by the University of Cambridge, students will have:
- a comprehensive understanding of techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature, applicable to their own research
- demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and inquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field
- shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies
- demonstrated some self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems
- acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- During their MPhil the students are based in a research group, supported by their primary supervisor and the CIMR Graduate Education Committee. There is no taught and examined course work, but students can take part in core topic discussion sessions held once a week by PIs in CIMR.
- Along with the specific research training provided in the laboratory in which the student works, he or she receives further training within the CIMR in the form of graduate workshops concentrating on research techniques, research seminars both on the Addenbrooke's site and elsewhere in the University, and graduate student seminars dealing with generic skills such as intellectual property rights, writing a thesis or paper, and entrepreneurship.
