McMaster University offers a stand-alone two year M.A. Philosophy Program. The mix of graduate courses and thesis research and writing is designed to prepare students for more advanced philosophical studies or for a professional career outside academia.

Programme Structure

The requirements for the M.A. are: B- standing or better in course work, normally amounting to six one-term courses or the equivalent, and a satisfactory thesis and oral defense on a subject approved by the Department.

The Department recommends that students with deficiencies in their undergraduate preparation in Philosophy should remedy these deficiencies through the courses they select. The thesis should demonstrate a capacity for independent study and critical judgement.

B+ (B- for Engineering) minimum average, based on a full year equivalent of final year courses (3rd/4th level) relevant to the program
