Overview
Mechanical Engineering with Professional Practice at University of Wolverhampton takes the same advanced, digital manufacturing-focused mechanical engineering curriculum as our standard MSc and adds one crucial thing: a genuine, assessed 26-week Professional Practice placement. You don’t just study employability — you practise it, in a research centre or in industry, before you graduate.- Graduate with proven experience, not just a promise. A dedicated 30-credit Professional Work Experience and Development module puts a real 26-week placement at the centre of your masters, not on the sidelines of it.
- Choose the placement route that fits your ambitions. Take a University-based Research Placement to build academic and research skills, or a Vocational Placement with an industry employer to develop hands-on professional experience — you decide which suits your career direction.
- Study the same in-demand curriculum. Design Optimisation and Simulation, Industry 4.0, Sustainable Additive Manufacturing Applications and Applied High-Speed Machining give you the same digital manufacturing depth as our flagship MSc.
- Let your placement shape your dissertation. Your 60-credit dissertation can draw directly on what you encounter during your placement, turning workplace or research experience into a substantial piece of academic work.
- Leave with evidence, not just a transcript. A reflective portfolio built during your placement gives you concrete, structured material to bring to job interviews and future Chartered Engineer applications.
Employability on the course
Employability here isn’t a set of general promises — it’s a specific, credit-bearing module with a real placement at its centre.
- Extended induction: time to settle into postgraduate study and get to know the University and our Springfield Site before teaching begins.
- Structured learning pathways: taught modules build systematically toward your placement and your 60-credit dissertation.
- Hands-on project experience: live industrial projects and practical laboratory work run throughout your taught modules, ahead of your placement.
- Embedded professional development: you’ll build a reflective portfolio during your placement, alongside formal guidance on report writing and presentation.
- Industry-informed modules: content is shaped by staff research and consultancy in digital manufacturing, additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0, plus the School’s direct employer links.
- A genuine placement module: every student undertakes the 26-week Professional Work Experience and Development module — choosing between a limited number of guaranteed University Research Placements (first come, first served) or a competitive, employer-led Vocational Placement, which may be paid.
