Overview
Designed for healthcare professionals who want to deepen their understanding of critically ill patients while developing their ability to critically evaluate and undertake research, this Critical Care at University of Buckingham combines advanced study of critical care medicine with research methodologies, critical appraisal, and an independent Professional Project.
Across eight modules studied over two years, you'll examine respiratory support, sepsis, cardiovascular support and heart failure, post-surgery management, traumatic and non-traumatic head injury, ethics and law, and critical care rehabilitation. You'll explore respiratory failure, mechanical and non-invasive ventilation, sepsis diagnosis and management, antimicrobial therapy, fluid resuscitation, haemodynamic and cardiovascular support, postoperative critical care, traumatic brain injury, and rehabilitation. You'll then progress into master's-level healthcare research, developing your understanding of research methods and critical appraisal before completing an independent Professional Project relevant to Critical Care and your professional interests.
What you'll study
During the first stage of the programme, you'll develop advanced knowledge across respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, postoperative, and wider Critical Care. You'll examine respiratory support and failure, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, cardiovascular support and heart failure, post-surgery management, head injury, ethical and legal decision-making, and critical care rehabilitation.
You'll then develop your understanding of healthcare research methodologies and critical appraisal, including approaches to research design, evidence evaluation, research ethics, and the development of a research proposal. Your studies culminate in an independent Professional Project, completed with academic supervision, which provides an opportunity to investigate an area relevant to Critical Care and your own professional interests. Research is therefore an integral part of the MSc rather than simply an additional year of taught Critical Care study.
