Overview
Mathematics teachers help young people make sense of the world. They develop learners’ confidence to think logically, solve problems, recognise patterns and understand the mathematical ideas that shape everyday life, science, technology, finance and society. On Secondary Education Mathematics at University of Gloucestershire, you will become part of that mission: inspiring curiosity, building resilience and helping pupils see mathematics as something meaningful, powerful and accessible to all.
Grounded in research and shaped by leading organisations including the Education Endowment Foundation, the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), GLOW Maths Hub and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), the course helps you understand why great teaching works as well as how to do it. With a strong commitment to Teaching for Mastery, you will work alongside local Mastery Champions and expert practitioners to explore approaches that support fluency, reasoning and problem solving for all learners. You will learn how to sequence knowledge, challenge and support all pupils and create meaningful mathematical experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
The programme also explores contemporary themes shaping mathematics education today, including inclusion and social justice, education for sustainability, decolonising the curriculum and the thoughtful use of AI to support planning, assessment and adaptive teaching. Subject sessions encourage professional dialogue, reflection and critical engagement with research, helping you to develop as an evidence-informed and reflective practitioner.
Careers
Our vision is for all of our students to become graduate ambassadors for education, leaders of learning, outstanding teachers and subject experts.
