Overview

The goal of the Management Studies programme at University of Cambridge is to lay the foundations that will enable students to contribute to the academic debate in their discipline through publications in leading journals, which they will develop during their PhD.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will have:

Gained knowledge of research methods used in management research.

Developed strong awareness of the current academic debates in their chosen discipline, and knowledge of the underlying theories of management.

Gained practical knowledge of management research through close supervision of their dissertation project

Developed strong methodological expertise across a spectrum of research areas and the ability to apply these methodologies as part of the dissertation research project.

Developed a strong awareness of the imperative of societal impact with management research, through a dissertation.

Gained auxiliary professional skills, e.g. communication skills, presentation skills, writing skills, research project management skills, literature review skills.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

For the MRes, the research training consists of five modules assessed by coursework and a dissertation.
Modules will be drawn from a list of research modules offered by Cambridge Judge Business School or other University departments. The portfolio of modules will be tailored to the student's needs, taking account of their research interest and prior training.
The dissertation complements the research coursework with practical research training overseen by a faculty supervisor. Informal opportunities to develop research skills also exist through mentoring by more advanced research students and members of staff. Students are integrated into the research culture of their subject group and attend the group's regular research seminars. The dissertation score counts for 50% of the final mark.
Most students will take their modules in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, leaving the Easter Term fully dedicated to the dissertation work

Applicants for this course should have achieved a Masters (Merit).
If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country.
We consider applications from applicants who have completed or are in the process of completing a Master’s programme relevant to their intended PhD specialisation. We look for indications that you have the calibre and training to undertake a research-focused degree.
The Master's degree must be from a university or department with a strong international research reputation. You are expected to provide evidence, through transcripts and academic reference letters, that you are among the top five per cent of Master's students in your year, or among the top ten per cent of students if your Master’s degree is from the University of Cambridge or a similarly selective university.
You are normally required to have a first-class honours degree at the undergraduate level.
