This degree of Advancing Counselling Practice at University of Sunderland helps you take your existing knowledge further. You’ll use current research and theory to strengthen your core counselling approach, while also exploring new ways of working.

You’ll learn in the context of today’s changing mental health landscape. Through research, reflection, and real-life case studies, you’ll explore different client groups and the issues they face. Your teaching is shaped by counselling theory and brought to life by experienced professionals working in mental health and psychological therapy.

This is the first course of its kind in the region. It offers a master’s-level progression route if you already have a Level 6 qualification. It also aligns with the Scope of Practice and Education (SCoPEd) framework, helping you develop your skills and move towards higher levels of practice.

By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to stand out in the field of counselling. It’s especially useful if you’re thinking about private practice, advanced professional registration,or PhD study. Whether you want to work with adults or young people, you’ll gain the confidence to progress in a complex and changing mental health environment.

To apply, you must be a practitioner with at least a 2:2 degree in counselling or psychotherapy.

You should also have a qualification recognised by one of the following:

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS)

The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

This ensures you've met the requirements to be eligible for registered membership.

Alternatively, you may hold both of the following:

A 2:2 degree in a related subject (e.g. health or care) and a satisfactory personal statement

A Level 5 qualification in counselling, recognised by BACP, NCPS, or the UKCP.
