Overview
Part of the course is devoted to a taught study-unit discussing legal research, analysis and writing. Through supervised research, you will become equipped with a sound understanding of your chosen topic, advanced research and writing skills. The aim is to encourage appreciation of the relevant rules of the international legal regime. The dissertation is intended to contribute to the subject, either through your original work or through the analytical exposition of existing knowledge. The Department specializes in the international law of the sea, maritime security law, international law on maritime search and rescue, international human rights law and international migration law and may accept to supervise research in these fields. Other areas may be considered subject to supervisor availability.
Career:
As a holder of this degree, you will have gained a deep insight into a particular area of international law and will thus be considered as possessing specialised knowledge in the field. You will have demonstrated your ability to undertake in-depth, analytical research into an issue and will therefore be well-equipped to occupy a number of posts with international components including those in national administrations, international institutions and organisations, NGOs, diplomatic service and in the academic field.

Applicants must be in possession of:
- the degree of Doctor of Laws or
- a Bachelor degree in Law as the main area of study, obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II or
- a degree from the University of Malta or any recognised overseas institution which the Board considers to be comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).
