Overview
Digital workflow modalities are revolutionizing the field of dentistry. Basically, digital dentistry allows for planning the whole treatment and actually treating the patient using fully digital workflows. For instance, instead of using expensive impression materials, patients can have their dental arches scanned by means of an intraoral scanner, from which restorations and other treatment devices can be digitally designed and either 3D-printed or milled by using CAD-CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technologies.
With such technologic methodologies, besides digital radiographs and photographs, a three-dimensional (3D) virtual patient can be created for diagnosing and simulating an entire treatment plan noninvasively. Furthermore, digital workflow allows for sharing treatment plan data immediately with other professionals via network- communication tools. These, in turn, help achieving the patient expectations.
