Overview
The Area and Cultural Studies programme at University of Helsinki is designed for the globally curious and outward-looking. You can focus on a specific region: Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, North America—or go beyond borders with Transcultural studies.
Engage with key questions of identity, power, media, religion and history, in dialogue with an international community of scholars and fellow students. Along the way, you will develop critical, analytical and communication skills.
Career opportunities
Graduates work in roles that require cultural, linguistic and regional expertise—analysing policy, coordinating international projects and advising organisations across sectors.
Typical employers include ministries, NGOs, international organisations, media, universities, museums and cultural institutions as well as global companies.
Your studies include a professional-skills component that connects academic learning to working life through practical projects, career courses and internships. Internship opportunities are also available abroad.
The programme also provides a strong foundation for doctoral studies, including the Doctoral Programme in the Humanities at the University of Helsinki.
