Peace and Security Studies from Addis Ababa University, as peace and security issues have been changing over the past several decades since the end of the Cold War, the programme strives to help current and future leaders, professionals, academics/researchers, etc. to make sense of the dynamics of peace and security at multiple levels.

Key facts

The program equips students with the knowledge and skills required in peace and security affairs. In so doing, they will examine the scholarly (empirical and theoretical) investigations of the reasons for the decline of interstate wars and the simultaneous rise of the “New Wars”/intrastate wars, the “Global War on Terrorism”, climate change-conflict nexus, development-peace nexus, human rights issues, etc. The modules and the courses within them are designed to produce researchers, practitioners, and policy advocates who will positively contribute to communities’ endeavour to bring about peace and security at the local, national, regional, and global levels.

General requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to the program are a first degree in any of the disciplines of social sciences, humanities, and law; passing the National Graduate Admissions Test (NGAT), and passing the entrance examination prepared by the Institute.
However, the final decision on the offer of admission depends on the applicants’ competitiveness as demonstrated by their results vis à-vis other applicants in terms of their academic background, CGPA, NGAT score, and entrance examination score
