Accounting and Finance from Addis Ababa University is a graduate program offered to eligible candidates who wish to become Financial Economist, Portfolio Manager, Fund Manager, Bank Economist, Securities Broker, Business Advisor, Commercial Loan Officer, Credit Analyst/Manager, Financial Consultant, Investment Banker/Manager, Money Market Analyst, Pension Fund Manager, Securities Analyst/Advisor, and Securities Brokerage Manager.

The main aim of the program is to provide the analytical and quantitative skills that are needed for a successful professional career in Finance. Whether for day-to-day operations or strategic decision-making, it is an imperative to use economic theories, financial analysis techniques and quantitative models. The program equips learners with the quantitative techniques used to evaluate financial decisions; understand and interpret market reactions to macroeconomic events and financial turmoil. There are two concentrations/tracks under the MSc in Finance program: Financial Economics and Investment Management.

The Financial Economics track focuses on analyzing the use and distribution of resources in markets in which decisions are made under uncertainty. It employs economic theory to evaluate how time, risk (uncertainty), opportunity costs, and information can create incentives or disincentives for a particular decision. The Investment Management track enables students to develop skills important for analyzing financial instruments and constructing optimal investment portfolio. It provides students with a solid understanding of the interaction of finance, financial markets, securities and investment decisions. This track covers a comprehensive mix of analytic techniques applicable for the buy side in the capital market operations

General requirements

Proof of Bachelor’s study with a minimum cGPA of 2.50 and a minimum cGPA of 2.75 in a relevant major on a 4:00 scale is a prerequisite for applicants seeking admission to MA/MSc/MPhil/LLM programs.
Applicants should be able to take the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) of the AAU and get a passing mark. Alternatively, standardized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, ACT, SAT, or LSAT and with the corresponding passing marks are acceptable.
Submit a letter of intent for joining the Master’s or the PhD program.
Applicants will submit two (2) letters of recommendation from former university instructors or professors.
