Overview

Civil Engineering - Geotechnical Engineering from Addis Ababa University will provide a solid background in all areas of geotechnical engineering and helps students to concentrate on areas of particular interest in the areas of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, dynamic analysis of geotechnical structures, landslides (assessments and remedies), slope stability, embankment dam, retaining structures (conventional ones, shoring structures, …), machine foundations, geotechnical investigation and monitoring (planning and execution), soil-structure interaction, and physical and numerical modeling.

Key facts

Students will be trained with advanced methods of analysis so that efficient design of geotechnical engineering structures in terms of safety and economy will be made. Students will work closely with faculty and also interact with practitioners through field trips, seminars and professional symposiums and meetings.

Admission requirement for the program requires a pass result of Graduate Aptitude Test (GAT) administered by the university or another pertinent governmental body, such as the ministry of education, in order to evaluate their verbal, quantitative, and analytical reasoning skills as indicators of potential success in graduate studies, two letters of recommendation, a written statement of purpose, curriculum vitae, BSc degree in Civil Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline, a pass result of entrance examination designed by the school of Civil engineering, covering relevant coursework in the undergraduate program like hydraulics, soil mechanics, foundation engineering, mechanics of materials, reinforced concrete
