Urban Planning and Design from Addis Ababa University two-year program provides specialized training through two distinct tracks: Urban Planning and Urban Design.

The need for qualified individuals with experience in urban planning and design is more than ever as Ethiopia embarks on a massive urban development project. The program aims to provide students with the advanced abilities necessary to fulfill this increasing demand. It also equips students with the skills to independently work in urban planning and design, provide expert advice, and conduct research in these fields. For the MSc in Urban Planning and Design, particularly the Urban Planning specialization, applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Planning and Design, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Engineering, Architecture, Architecture and Urban Planning, or closely related social science fields such as Geography, Economics, Sociology, or other relevant disciplines that include coursework in urban and regional planning. Candidates for the Urban Design track is required to have completed a B.Sc. degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, or a related field, and must also have at least two years of relevant work experience.

General requirements

Proof of Bachelor’s study with a minimum cGPA of 2.50 and a minimum cGPA of 2.75 in a relevant major on a 4:00 scale is a prerequisite for applicants seeking admission to MA/MSc/MPhil/LLM programs.
Applicants should be able to take the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) of the AAU and get a passing mark. Alternatively, standardized tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, ACT, SAT, or LSAT and with the corresponding passing marks are acceptable.
Submit a letter of intent for joining the Master’s or the PhD program.
Applicants will submit two (2) letters of recommendation from former university instructors or professors.

Produce, as may be required, certificate of work experience related to the desired field of study.
