Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Addis Ababa University students will gain an in-depth understanding of the distribution, determinants, and prevention of disease, epidemiological study designs, methods and operations, infectious and chronic disease epidemiology, policy aspects, data analytics, data interpretation, and implementation and evaluation of health-related interventions and programs.

This program is fundamental to public health and serves as a principal measuring instrument of health utilized to perform public health assessment functions. Graduates of this program will be equipped to confidently design, conduct, and analyze clinical, population-based, environmental, policy, and methodological health-related research and programs. The Master of Public Health (with Specialty in Health Research Ethics Track) is a two-year postgraduate masters training concentrating on health research ethics, which is offered through the Addis Ababa University (AAU) School of Public Health (SPH) in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in the US. Qualifying candidates will register for an active participation in course modules including practicum (fieldwork) visits and attachments at selected agencies, organizations and committees relevant to their interests in research ethics. In the first year, the program provides students with modules on the basic tools and principles of public health in the first semester, followed in the second semester by highly specialized modules specific to foundation of ethics in general and research ethics in particular augmented by practical sessions and case studies. The second year is dedicated for mentored thesis project where trainees are expected to conduct health research to address significant issues of the area of research ethics.

General requirements
- Admission requirements for the program include first degree in Medicine (MD or DVM), a bachelor's degree in public health, nursing, environmental health, and statistics; as well as Bachelor’s degrees in biomedical studies and Natural Sciences, Social sciences and Humanities. All general requirements for admission to all Master’s Degrees in the University set forth for all schools of graduate studies shall apply to the program.
- As part of the AAU admission requirements candidates must obtain a pass mark in the National Graduate Admission Tests (NGAT) exam. Applicants will also be required to submit an admission application form, official transcripts of their academic records from their undergraduate studies, a statement of objectives/motivation, a resume/biodata, and two letters of recommendation.
