General requirements

• Minimum admission to a master’s programme requires an NQF Level 8 qualification such as an honours degree, a 480-credit bachelor’s degree (including at least 96 credits at NQF Level 8), or a postgraduate diploma in a relevant field. The field of study must be approved by the relevant Faculty Board, the Senate Higher Degrees Committee, and Senate. Admission is not automatic and is subject to departmental requirements approved by the Executive Dean. Departments may also require completion of specific preparatory components before the master’s degree is awarded. Applicants are generally expected to have an average of at least 65% in their previous qualification. In exceptional cases, candidates with 60–64% may be considered if supported by a motivation from the supervisor and Head of Department and approved by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science.
